Stupidest Charity Ever

Reading an article on the BBC website [1] about a woman in the UK bitten by a rabid dog, I was dumbfounded after the first line:
"A social worker who runs a charity that brings street dogs from Sri Lanka into the UK was one of three people bitten by a puppy infected with rabies."
A charity that brings street dogs from Sri Lanka into the UK? Is this woman totally stark-raving mad? Don't get me wrong, I'm not against animal charities: RSCPA, Battersea Dogs Home and the like all do a sterling job of looking after animals that have been subjected to cruelty and provide assistance in the prosecution of the idiots responsible.

It transpires that Kim Cooling, the lady in question, runs a charity that rescues street dogs from Sri Lanka and brings them back here for rehoming. Now call me harsh, but isn't this a bloody awful waste of money? Why can't she just rehome them in Sri Lanka? The money spent on airfreight combined with the cost of facilities and wages for carers in the UK must be enough to pay for a Sri Lankan mansion for the little rascals!

People don't often realise that the effects of charity can be doubled if the money raised in the UK is used fully in the country of destination. In this particular instance, I think it is an absolute joke that people would dare to run such a charity in a country torn apart by a brutal 25 year civil war that has killed 70,000 people [2]. What about the orphans that these resources could feed/house/educate? What about the hospitals that these resources could fill with medicines?

Kim Cooling, congratulations on Animal SOS Sri Lanka receiving my vote for the stupidest charity ever.

I propose that Mountain Moo Cow is awarded the stupidest blogger award ever for the lies he writes.
Moo doesn't care about the facts, just likes writing a load of libellous poppycock. For example the charity he slanders hasn't spent a penny on importing strays to the UK they only conduct their work in Sri Lanka and save human lives through their rabies vaccination programs.
Silly Moo needs to go out to graze before he is taken to court for defamation/libel.

I am basing my judgement on source [1], which clearly states:

"A social worker who runs a charity that brings street dogs from Sri Lanka into the UK was one of three people bitten by a puppy infected with rabies.

Kim Cooling was "nipped" on the chin, wrist and face by the dog, which died two days later in quarantine.

The puppy was one of 13 dogs brought by the charity to Chingford Quarantine Kennels in north-east London."

Any response?

Could you leave the retraction article's URL to show this? It is arguable that basing such an article on one single source was poor call and some of the phrasing was a bit strong, but the fact is that until I see some sort of proof that this is not the case I find it hard to retract my statement.

Importing stray animals from Sri Lanka would, to me, be a very difficult thing to defend in a country with such terrible human suffering. For me, the priority of human suffering needing to be addressed than that of animals is due to our higher level of sentience and consciousness. Surely a being that has more self-awareness and more ability to feel pain and suffering is more worthy of aid?

To be honest, it's not even this that I objected to, it was more the waste of funds involved in bringing them over from Sri Lanka. So if I see some evidence of this being incorrect, I'll gladly address my blog in question.

The following correction was printed in the Observer's For the record column, Sunday May 11 2008

The article below repeated news agency claims that charity worker Kim Cooling was bitten by a rabid puppy which had been imported into Britain by her charity, Animal SOS Sri Lanka. We should make it clear that the dog, along with four other healthy puppies, had been brought into the country by individuals who were not working under the auspices of her charity, which works solely in Sri Lanka.

One of the retractions above and there are others because most newspapers follow suit when they know they have written libellous stories. The original source -THE NEWS AGENCY got it wrong and all the papers copied this inaccurate story.
I hope you now have the integrity to retract your statement as your comments are extremely offensive and libellous.
You also seem to be losing the plot by bringing other aspects into the equation now- for example how individuals chose to spend their money. How do you know these people do not help humans? Are you told how to spend your money?
Do you contribute to human charities?
You also fail to understand that humans are saved by rabies vaccination programs which the charity you are quick to condemn operate, as well as helping many poor families and their pets. You are ignorant of the facts and tend to make them up as you go along to suit.

To say that animals do not fear death and suffer like we humans do is absolute poppycock.
All beings fear death and in suffering animals are our equals. The difference is, we, the so called 'superior' species tend to inflict the suffering on animals and ourselves. MOST THINGS IN LIFE ARE MANMADE INCLUDING THE LIES ON YOUR OFFENSIVE BLOG

Indeed I see that a retraction was printed from this link http://www.guardian.co.uk/society/2008/apr/27/health.

I am therefore happy to retract my statement regarding the charity Animal SOS in Sri Lanka. As a young and foolish blogger, I had not quite grasped the importance of having a much stronger evidence base before writing such a strongly worded article. One of the benefits of being human is that we live and learn, so thank you for bringing this to my attention and my apologies for not publishing this conclusing statement earlier.

In my past, I tended to be suspicious and unsupportive of animal charities as I fervently believed that human suffering was a higher priority for charitable donation due to our higher level of consciousness. However, my position has changed to become much more nuanced. I agree that animals have a right to live without suffering and I can appreciate the argument that animals are especially in need of help because this said lower level of consciousness means that they are unable to take steps to alleviate the causes of their suffering. I still maintain that human charities are much more important to me personally, but I can see the value of animal charities when they do good work.

It appears that the charity in question does good work in this field. Working to decrease the number of strays in a country is good for animal welfare but also human welfare as they can carry diseases.

Again, thank you for bringing this to my attention and my apologies to the delay in writing this post. I have not used this blog in many years.

Yours,
MMC
